The tricky part isn’t always the Hebrew. It’s the assumption you brought from home.
“Twelve checks, two guarantors, and a security deposit.”
Normal, negotiable, or too much?
Housing · situations 023-042“We just need one more form because you’re American.”
Which form? And what does it mean?
Money · situations 043-055“You have a referral. Do you also have a tofes 17?”
Wait. Those are different things?
Healthcare · situations 087-095A little context changes everything.
Not everything unfamiliar is a scam. Not everything “normal” is a good deal.
You don’t have to read it cover to cover. Look up the situation you’re in, get a clearer answer, and get on with your day.
“Preferably with enough time left for coffee.”
From the introduction to LO FREIERNot a translated Israeli handbook.
This book starts with the things Americans bring with them: U.S. bank accounts, tax questions, familiar expectations, and a perfectly reasonable belief that “credit card” means what it meant back home.
From Aliyah paperwork and apartment guarantees to health funds and family logistics, it helps you ask the right question before a small misunderstanding becomes an expensive afternoon.
Use the authorized queue or official ordering process. Confirm your destination, fare basis, and payment method before departure. Keep the driver or vehicle details and receipt. If a fare or route looks wrong, avoid a confrontation in traffic and raise it through the operator's complaint channel afterward.
Do not follow an unsolicited driver simply because they speak excellent English and say the queue is closed.
WHERE’S THE CATCH?Airport procedures can change. A professional-looking sign or confident approach is not the same as authorization, and a quoted price should be understood before your bags are in the trunk.
WHAT TO SAY
